“Doctor saab, pair mein jalan thi. Socha thoda araam karne se theek ho jaayega.”
I hear this almost every week.
Many people ignore numbness, tingling, burning feet, weakness or balance problems. They assume it is age, weakness, vitamin deficiency, diabetes or overwork. Sometimes that is true. But sometimes these symptoms are the first warning signs of a serious nerve, brain or spinal cord disorder, including peripheral neuropathy and other neurological conditions.
I am Dr Kavindra Singh, a Neurosurgeon at Rainbow Super Speciality Hospital, Narnaul. Patients often reach me after weeks or months of waiting. The most common reason? They hoped the problem would go away on its own.
The reality is simple.
Nerve damage is very different from muscle pain. Some nerve conditions can become permanent if treatment is delayed.
Patients often ask me:
- Is numbness dangerous?
- Why are my feet burning?
- Can diabetes cause tingling or diabetic neuropathy?
- Can nerve damage be reversed?
- When should I see a neurosurgeon?
The answer depends on one thing: Are the symptoms stable or are they getting worse? If they are progressing rapidly, it may be time to find a neurosurgeon near you for urgent evaluation.
If symptoms are spreading, progressing or affecting daily activities, they should never be ignored.
Quick Warning Signs
- Numbness moving upward from the feet
- Sudden numbness on one side of the body
- Numbness with breathing difficulty
- Leg weakness with bladder or bowel problems
- Sudden hand weakness or dropping objects
- Tingling with facial drooping or slurred speech
- New numbness after an accident
- Electric-shock sensation down the spine (Lhermitte’s sign)
- Burning feet with fever and stiff neck
- Symptoms are getting worse hour by hour

1. Numbness Moving Upward From the Feet
This is one of the most dangerous patterns I see.
A patient may start with mild tingling in the toes. Within days, the numbness reaches the ankles, knees and sometimes the hands. Walking becomes difficult and the legs feel weak. This can happen in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a condition where the immune system attacks the nerves and can cause progressive nerve weakness.
Many patients have recently recovered from a stomach infection, cough, fever or viral illness. What worries me is how quickly it can progress. A person walking normally today may struggle to stand a few days later.
Search ‘best neurosurgeon near me and rush: If numbness is climbing upward or weakness is increasing daily, seek emergency medical attention immediately at a neuro centre या hospital equipped to manage neurological emergencies.
2. Sudden Numbness on One Side of the Body
If only one arm, one leg or one side of the face suddenly becomes numb, think of stroke or a mini-stroke warning sign first.
This is especially important for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or a smoking history.
Many patients tell me the numbness lasted only a few minutes and then disappeared. That does not make it safe.
A temporary episode may be a mini-stroke or TIA. It is often a warning that a major stroke may follow.
If one side of the body suddenly feels different from the other, do not wait.
खोज ‘top neurosurgeon near me and rush: Immediate brain evaluation at a neuro hospital can save brain function and prevent permanent disability.
3. Tingling or Numbness With Breathing Difficulty
This is a true emergency.
The nerves that control breathing can become affected in severe neurological conditions.
A patient from धारूहेड़ा had only tingling in his feet a few days earlier. But one day, he suddenly found it difficult to take a deep breath. I have seen his family arrive, believing they were dealing with a simple nerve problem. When they came here, he was admitted to the ICU. Difficulty breathing combined with numbness or weakness should never be ignored.
It was an emergency!! Locate the most trusted neurosurgeon near me and rush or call emergency services immediately.

4. Leg Weakness With Loss of Bladder or Bowel Control
As one of the best spine surgeons, this is one of the most urgent situations I encounter.
If severe back pain is followed by leg weakness, numbness around the groin area, inability to pass urine or loss of bowel control, the spinal nerves may be under severe pressure. This condition is called Cauda Equina Syndrome, a serious form of spinal nerve compression.
Several patients initially think it is a urinary problem, a diabetes issue or weakness. It is not. Delayed treatment can result in permanent bladder dysfunction, weakness and nerve damage.
Find the nearest neuro doctor near me and rush! Emergency MRI and urgent neurosurgical assessment at a specialized neuro hospital are required in such cases.
5. Sudden Hand Weakness or Dropping Objects
A 50-year-old software engineer from Rewari, Haryana, suddenly started dropping her mobile phone, cup or pen. Buttoning her shirt became difficult. Like many other cases, she assumed it was tiredness or age-related weakness.
The real cause was spinal cord compression in the neck, also known as cervical myelopathy in some patients. It could also have been a serious neurological problem affecting the brain. We had to operate on her in an emergency because she had delayed the case and her condition needed immediate treatment.
Patients with long-standing neck pain should be particularly careful. The transition from normal hand function to sudden weakness is never something to ignore.
Same-day medical evaluation is strongly recommended.
6. Tingling With Facial Drooping or Slurred Speech
This is another classic stroke warning sign.
- The face may look uneven.
- Speech may become unclear.
- One arm may feel weak or numb.
- Some patients recover within minutes and feel normal again. That temporary recovery creates a dangerous false sense of security.
The risk of a major stroke can remain extremely high. If family members notice facial drooping, speech changes or sudden tingling, every minute matters.
Reach immediately to the nearest neuro emergency hospital, like Rainbow Superspeciality Hospital, Narnaul.
7. New Numbness After a Fall or Accident
Road accidents, tractor injuries, workplace falls and sports injuries are common causes of spinal trauma. Any new numbness, tingling, weakness or loss of sensation after an injury should be treated seriously.
One mistake I often see is patients trying to walk immediately after the accident. If the spine has been injured, unnecessary movement can worsen the damage. Keep the patient still and seek emergency medical care without delay.
8. Electric-Shock Sensation Down the Spine
Patients often describe it very clearly.
“When I bend my neck forward, it feels like electricity runs down my body.”
This sensation may indicate pressure on the spinal cord or another neurological condition affecting the nervous system. It may not require an ambulance, but it should never be ignored.
The spinal cord may already be under stress. Without treatment, weakness, balance problems and difficulty using the hands can develop over time.
My Advice: Specialist evaluation should be arranged as soon as possible.
9. Burning Feet With Fever and Stiff Neck
Burning sensations in the legs or feet combined with fever, severe headache or neck stiffness can indicate a serious infection involving the brain or spinal cord.
Many families assume it is a seasonal viral illness and wait. That delay can be dangerous. Brain and spinal infections can worsen rapidly and cause permanent neurological injury.
My Advice: Immediate hospital evaluation is essential.
10. Symptoms Getting Worse Hour by Hour
The speed at which symptoms are progressing often matters more than the symptoms themselves.
A person with mild tingling for several years is very different from someone whose numbness started yesterday and is rapidly worsening. The nervous system does not always recover completely once significant damage occurs. The patients who recover best are usually not those with the mildest disease. They are the ones who seek treatment earliest.
My Advice: If numbness, weakness, burning sensations, speech problems, balance difficulties or walking issues are becoming worse over hours or days, do not wait.
A Special Message for Families
I frequently see patients delay treatment. That’s because they believe symptoms are caused by weakness, diabetes, aging, heavy work or a vitamin deficiency.
While many cases are not emergencies, some neurological conditions have treatment windows measured in hours rather than days, making timely evaluation at a neuro hospital extremely important.
The biggest mistake I see is ignoring mild symptoms that are becoming worse.
If symptoms are spreading, progressing or interfering with daily activities, your nerves may be giving you the only warning you will get. You can follow me on Instagram for more such advice or share your queries.
